In professional work, we call it PTI. When you start a job, they always ask, Did you do PTI? When you do a pre-trip inspection, it is before you start to drive. CDL holders have to review operating vehicles. I’m going to give you a checklist; please take note of it for your own safety.

In cab inspection
NOW we are going to start from the front of the vehicle:
Front of truck ( vehicle)
Inspection items usually include steering equipment.
Steering column or steering shaft: It has to be straight and not broken.
Steering box
- Tie rod and control arms: must be straight
- Drag link: always greasy
- Pitman arm: cotter pins and caste nuts are present; the mount is secure and tight.
Engine compliment
- Fluids: Power steering hoses and any tanks or reservoirs should all be securely mounted, and you have to be sure there are no leaks.
- Alternator: The driver has to make sure wires and belts are properly connected.
- Air compressors: Should be securely mounted and functional with no cracks or leaks.
- Belts: no crack, no bent, and no more than one-half of an inch (½”) of play in good working condions.
- Water pump: Pump hoses must be properly attached with no any leaks.
